Giant Steps - Coal River Valley Pinot Noir
Giant Steps - Coal River Valley Pinot Noir
Giant Steps' most far-flung single vineyard — and arguably their most striking. Sourced from the Nocton Vineyard in the Coal River Valley, which lies over the Meehan Range east of Hobart and rolls down to the Southern Ocean, this is Pinot grown as far south and as cold as Australia gets. Despite the cool temperatures, the sunlight hours are long and intense, resulting in remarkable depth of palate and colour.
The 2024 season in Tasmania started cold and wet, building a solid foundation with strong, healthy and generous bunch numbers, with slow plant growth all the way up until just prior to flowering. Fruit was handpicked in late April, chilled immediately and ferried across Bass Strait to the winery. The result is cut from a distinctly different cloth to the Yarra Valley wines — less floral, more fruit, with the freshest red and black cherries, woodsmoke and cedar running through, a touch of mint, semblances of undergrowth, and gorgeous length. The palate is medium bodied and gently plush, tannins in total harmony with the fruit.
