Raina - Umbria Grechetto
Raina - Umbria Grechetto
If you've been sleeping on Umbrian whites, this is your wake-up call. Grechetto is Umbria's great white grape — ancient, characterful, and wildly underrated — and Raina is one of the region's most thoughtful producers, farming their estate in the rolling hills south of Perugia with real care and intention.
What's in the glass? Think straw gold, a touch luminous, with a nose that opens on white peach, green apple and chamomile — then leans into something more textural and intriguing: a little fennel, a little almond, a whisper of crushed limestone. It's got that unmistakably Italian thing where it smells like somewhere specific.
On the palate it's dry, medium-bodied, and refreshingly crisp — lively acidity doing most of the heavy lifting, with stone fruit and herbal notes following through to a clean, slightly nutty finish. Not flashy. Not trying to be Chardonnay. Just a really honest, food-friendly white that drinks well now and doesn't ask much of you.
