CHATEAU PHELAN SEGUR - SAINT-ESTEPHE

The story of Châteaux Phélan-Ségur is one of innovation from the very beginning. It began when Bernard O’Phelan (1770-1841), a young Irish wine merchant, left his native town of Tipperary at the end of the 18th century to set himself up in Bordeaux. Before long Bernard married one of the daughters of Daniel Guestier, a well-known merchant in Bordeaux wine market. Soon after in 1805 he acquired Clos de Garramey, situated in Saint-Estèphe, then in 1810 Ségur de Cabanac estate. When developing the Châteaux Bernard placed the vat room and cellar at the heart of the Châteaux, among the very first to do what would become known as the “Médoc style”.

The vineyards of Phélan-Ségur are made up of four large sections, the parcels adjoining the vineyards of Châteaux Montrose and Calon Ségur, among others. The planting density is high and the mix of grape varieties is classic Médoc with 58% cabernet sauvignon and 39% merlot complemented by a touch of cabernet franc and petit verdot. Cabernet sauvignon brings incomparable power and structure forming the backbone of the Grand Vin. The wines have a refined intensity, exceptional balance and the ability to age for many, many years.
